Kesha Wore Suit to Grammy Awards to Convey Her ‘Place of Empowerment’

Kesha wore a vintage suit to the 2018 Grammy Awards to represent her “place of empowerment”.

The popstar has returned to the spotlight following the release of her album Rainbow last August, after experiencing struggles in her professional and personal life, including an ongoing legal battle with her former producer Dr. Luke, whom she has accused of sexual, physical and emotional abuse.

Stepping out at the Grammys on Sunday night (28Jan18), Kesha, 30, wore a dark blue two-piece from Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors, a cream silk shirt and silver glitter ankle boots, with her stylist Samantha Burkhart explaining that the ensemble was carefully curated to mark a new phase for the singer.

“After going through what she’s gone through in the last couple of years, her place of empowerment as a woman is wearing a suit,” Samantha told People. “She doesn’t have to put herself out there and be objectified in a dress. She gets to really make a powerful statement and own her place as a woman and be empowered.”

Kesha’s suit was particularly special, as it was designed by the late tailor Nudie Cohn, who was famous for making elaborate garments for celebrities including Hank Williams, John Lennon, Elton John, Elvis Presley, Cher and Johnny Cash. Cohn himself had worn the suit to his granddaughter’s wedding, and the outfit was especially perfect for the Grammys as it features white rose motifs on the lapels, dovetailing nicely into the evening’s white rose trend in support of the Time’s Up initiative fighting gender inequality and sexual harassment in the workplace.

“We didn’t want to do something that just looks like it’s a great red carpet moment,” the style expert added. “Rather, this is about Kesha and her music, her voice and her message and we want to keep it as authentic to who she is as possible.”

Kesha, who was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance, had a change of wardrobe for her performance of Praying during the awards ceremony, and took to the stage in a white suit embroidered with colorful flowers from Clinton Bespoke.
