Natascha McElhone exiting Designated Survivor to join The First TV series

Natascha Mcelhone is stepping down as the First Lady in TV drama Designated Survivor to star opposite Sean Penn in The First.
The English actress, who currently plays Kiefer Sutherland’s wife on TV, is leaving her role as Alex Kirkman after season two to take on a part in House of Cards creator Beau Willimon’s new series about the first space mission to Mars.
Details surrounding her role are being kept under wraps, but according to Deadline.com McElhone will play the British CEO behind the ambitious space mission.
“I am so excited to work with original, maverick artists like Beau Willimon and Sean Penn – it’s a real privilege to be invited…,” she says.
“What I so admire about Natascha’s work is the fearlessness and honesty she brings to every role,” Willimon adds. “She’s a wonderfully talented adventurer of the spirit, and I’m thrilled to be embarking on this journey with her.”
The series will begin production later this year (17) and will premiere on streaming service Hulu in 2018.
