Kevin Smith working on new Jay and Silent Bob movie

Filmmaker Kevin Smith has confirmed he’s working on a sequel to his 2001 film Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back.

Smith, who stars as mute co-protagonist Silent Bob in the movie he also directed, confirmed that he had drafted a script for a sequel to the cult stoner comedy on Instagram.

Captioning a screenshot from his laptop showing the cover page of a completed script for a movie titled Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, he wrote, “This is not a drill! This is an actual image from my laptop! Yes, Kids – @jayandsilentbob are coming back!”

Jay, played by Smith’s friend Jason Mewes, and Silent Bob first appeared in his 1994 debut Clerks, with the characters having minor roles in the filmmaker’s movies that take place in the fictional ‘View Askewniverse’ setting, such as 1995’s Mallrats, 1997’s Chasing Amy and 1999’s Dogma.

They then starred in their very own movie, which showed them trying to stop a superhero movie, Bluntman and Chronic, based on their lives, from being made.

In his post, Smith revealed that he had wanted to make a third Clerks film, but that the project had fallen through after one of its lead actors dropped out.

A proposed Mallrats TV series also fell through, and Smith, who recently directed episodes of comic book TV series Supergirl and The Flash, explained that he had decided to create a new Jay and Silent Bob film as he owns the rights to the characters.

“I don’t own Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy or #Dogma,” he wrote. “But I DO own #jayandsilentbob. So while I love playing with someone else’s new toys on @cwtheflash and @Supergirl, I’m getting eager to play with my old toys again in the inter-connected View Askewniverse I spent the first half of my career creating. ”

Smith described the new movie as a “fun flick” and a “silly-a** satire” which will see Jay and Silent Bob return to Hollywood to try and prevent a Bluntman and Chronic reboot from hitting cinemas.
The 46-year-old filmmaker also wrote that he expected the movie to have an “all-star cast”.
