Kristen Stewart is eyeing a leading role in upcoming action thriller Underwater.

Since rising to international fame as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga film franchise, the actress has largely avoided commercial movies in favor of independent projects, such as 2014’s Clouds of Sils Maria and 2015’s Equals.

But according to Deadline, Kristen is about to return to mainstream cinema, and is currently in negotiations with Twentieth Century Fox to appear in Underwater, which is being directed by The Signal‘s Will Eubank and produced by Chernin Entertainment.

Described as an underwater version of 1998’s Armageddon, the story centres on a team of researchers who, after an earthquake devastates their underwater station, have to navigate through a dangerous two miles of the ocean floor to make it to safety.

Should Kristen, 26, sign on to the project, she will play the film’s lead character, Norah, a jaded and hardened crew member who ends up in a relationship with another crew member.

Screenwriter Adam Cozad has revised Brian Duffield‘s original screenplay for the flick, with production expected to start as early as next month (Mar17) in New Orleans.

Kristen’s other recent credits include Woody Allen‘s Café Society, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and the psychological thriller Personal Shopper, while she also stars in the upcoming Lizzie Borden biopic Lizzie, opposite Chloë Sevigny.

And Kristen is set to have a busy filming schedule in the coming months, as the Chanel brand ambassador is currently in negotiations to star in a biopic about author JT LeRoy, alongside Helena Bonham Carter and James Franco. The film will be directed by Justin Kelly with production set to start in the summer (17).
