La Llorona horror myth is very real for star of new film

New horror film The Curse Of La Llorona is very real for its star Patricia Velasquez, because she was terrified by the myth of the tragic mum coming back from the dead to look for the children she drowned as a kid.
The Mummy star was born in Venezuela but grew up in Mexico and her mother used La Llorona to make sure her daughter was at home before it started getting dark.
“I grew up with it,” she tells Entertainment Tonight. “La Llorona, this is how my mom got us to make sure we would come back at five: ‘It gets dark, you’re inside – or La Llorona will get you. La Llorona is real for us.”
In the film, Velasquez plays a mother struggling to protect her children from the vengeful entity, who legend has it killed her two sons after finding her husband in bed with another woman – and then drowned herself. Doomed to roam the earth looking for children to replace her own, La Llorona has become very real for countless Mexican kids.
“Either we heard, we touch her, we’ve seen her,” Patricia adds, “I had someone the other day tell me that La Llorona touched her shoulder. So there’s all kinds of stories. If you start asking around, you will be surprised. She’s extremely important for us.”
