Laura Mvula has insisted being dropped by her former record label has been “liberating”.

The Green Gardens singer and Ivor Novello award winner was let go by RCA Victor, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment in January (17), causing an outpouring of support from fellow musicians Ellie Goulding and Bastille.

Laura’s tenure with Sony came to an abrupt end earlier this year following an extended period of upheaval in her personal life. She divorced opera singer Themba Mvula in 2015 and was open about her ongoing battle with “crippling” anxiety.

At the time she tweeted, “..so sad Sony have dropped me today but thankful for where they’ve gotten me to. Excited for the future. so much music I want to write.”

And her positive outlook has paid off as the 30-year-old has shared the parting of ways has since opened up “so many possibilities”.

“It is very easy to put overemphasis on some things that on the surface seem negative, be that being dropped or my personal stuff,” Mvula said in an interview with British newspaper Evening Standard. “Ultimately I have found the whole thing very liberating. Especially waving goodbye to my time with Sony. It opened up opportunity for my creativity.”

The singer has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company on music for their production of Antony & Cleopatra, and on Friday (21Jul17) she will perform at The Barbican with the London Symphony Orchestra. Speaking ahead of the show, she was philosophical about the parting of ways from her former label.

“It is an end to an amazing phase, the start of a new one. There are so many possibilities, music, television, film. It is a really exciting time,” she smiled.
