Lea Michele ready to revive Funny Girl on Broadway

Actress Lea Michele is calling on Broadway bosses to help her bring beloved musical Funny Girl back to the stage.
The star previously got the chance to live out her dream role as Fanny Brice on hit musical comedy Glee, in which her TV character Rachel Berry was cast in a revival of the popular Barbra Streisand production on New York’s Great White Way.
In 2014, show creator Ryan Murphy revealed he was actually in talks with Lea to launch Funny Girl on Broadway, but the project never materialised and now, three years later, the actress/singer is finally ready to make that commitment to the stage.
However, it seems Lea will have to wait a little longer as she suggests Murphy no longer hold the rights to the musical.
“I would do Funny Girl tomorrow. Actually, I would do it right now!” Lea laughed on U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America. “Ryan Murphy had the rights to it for a while, and we were going to do it but right after Glee, I felt we’d done a lot of the Funny Girl songs (on the show), but I feel like I’m ready now.”
If the 30-year-old is cast in a new production, it won’t be her first time gracing the Broadway stage. The former child star has appeared in four hit shows to date, including Spring Awakening, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2007.
Theatre bosses had previously tried to resurrect Funny Girl for a new generation of fans in 2011, when Six Feet Under actress Lauren Ambrose was tapped for the leading role. The musical had been due to start in Los Angeles in 2012, before moving to Broadway, but financial issues caused the reboot to be abandoned.
Streisand originated the part of Brice in the original 1964 stage show, which ran for three years and earned eight Tony nominations. The legendary singer/actress reprised the role in the 1968 film adaptation, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1969.
