A letter written by Lewis Carroll in 1891 sold for $19,000 (£11,875) at an auction on Wednesday (19Mar14). Carroll, real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, wrote the letter to his friend Anne Symonds more than 20 years after the publication of his most celebrated works, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass.
He told her how he hated the fame the books’ success had brought him and wished he had never written them. He described his horror at strangers discovering his true identity and recognising him on the street.
The letter was predicted to sell for $6,400 (£4,000) at the Bonhams auction in London but it fetched more than double that amount.
