Liam Neeson was left in tears by the script for the specially created charity sequel to beloved romantic comedy film Love Actually.

The Taken star is among the castmembers reuniting for a short sequel that will air as part of Britain’s Comic Relief charity telethon on Friday (24Mar17).

And the Northern Irish actor, who played a recently bereaved father in the original 2003 film says the new script is a real tearjerker.

Liam tells Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper he “got a big tear in my eye” reading Love Actually filmmaker Richard Curtis’ script for the short sequel, which will update fans on how the characters have fared in the 14 years since the first movie.

Returning to his role will be especially poignant for the star, as six years after starring in Love Actually he suffered a real-life tragedy similar to the one his character experienced in the film.

In 2009 his actress wife, Natasha Richardson, tragically passed away at the age of just 45 after suffering a brain injury in a skiing accident, leaving Liam to bring up their two sons Micheal and Daniel.

In Love Actually, Liam’s character Daniel was trying to bring up his young son Sam, played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster after the death of his wife.

Pictures from the set of the sequel showed the 64-year-old actor alongside a now grown-up Thomas, 26, sharing an emotional hug.

Liam jokes that of the returning cast, which also includes Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy, Andrew Lincoln, Hugh Grant and Martine McCutcheon he’s probably aged the best.

“They’ve all aged, except for me. I’m the only one who looks exactly the same,” he says.
Director Richard Curtis shared similar sentiments when announcing the Love Actually Comic Relief special.

“I would never have dreamt of writing a sequel to Love Actually, but I thought it might be fun to do 10 minutes to see what everyone is now up to,” he said. “Who has aged best? I guess that’s the big question… or is it so obviously Liam?”

The follow-up, titled Red Nose Day Actually, will air on BBC One on 24 March (17) as part of the biannual Red Nose Day telethon, raising funds for Comic Relief, the celebrity backed charity helping the world’s unfortunate.
