Lin-Manuel Miranda Releasing New Hamilton Music Every Month for a Year

Lin-Manuel Miranda has promised fans of his Broadway smash Hamilton a little new music every month for a year as a follow-up to 2016’s The Hamilton Mixtape album.

Miranda has been planning a sequel to last year’s compilation, which featured covers of songs from the musical by artists like Kelly Clarkson, Sia, Alicia Keys, and John Legend, but now admits he’ll never be able to top that project.

So, instead, he’s planning to release a new track, inspired by the show, every month, beginning with a new tune he has written, recorded by The Decemberists.

He has titled his new project ‘Hamildrops‘.

The first taste will be served on Friday (15Dec17), six days before Hamilton’s opening night in London’s West End, and he’ll release a new song every month until December, 2018.

Announcing the news on Twitter, he writes: “A year ago this month we released The Hamilton Mixtape. It was the culmination of so many dreams come true. Every artist, every interpretation represented the original impulse I had for this story, even before this thing was a musical.

“I know I promised you a Hamilton Mixtape Vol 2, but nothing’s gonna match those songs in that order… at that moment in December 2016… So today, we begin THE HAMILDROPS. We’re gonna drop some new Hamilton content, every month, December NOW through December 2018.”

And opening up about the first tune, Miranda adds: “‘member how I said I once wrote some Decemberists-esque lyrics for a Ben Franklin tune, but never set ’em to music? So I sent the lyrics to @ColinMeloy. He’s in @TheDecemberists. And HE set it to music as only he and his crew can. It absolutely blew me away. I went BACK to write new lyrics for a bridge for him. He took it to @TheDecemberists & they brought Ben Franklin to life.”
