Lin-Manuel Miranda surprised a high school drama club as he attended their production of his musical, In The Heights.
The Hamilton star shocked students at New York’s George Washington High on Friday (May 31, 2019) when he arrived on stage and bowed down to the teen actors.
Jon M. Chu, the director of the upcoming In The Heights movie, recorded footage from the audience at the moment Miranda surprised the production.
“We start shooting #InTheHeightsMovie on Monday. So after our final rehearsal, we took a trip 2 George Washington high school in the Heights 2 see them perform In The Heights!” Chu shared on Twitter. “Could not b more Inspired by these students.”
“It’s cool I only cried 10 times,” Miranda replied. “These kids were so good. Our future is so bright.”
Quiara A. Hudes, who wrote the book for In the Heights stage musical and also penned the film’s script, was also present.
“These students were pure life and energy, and the local audience laughed at different lines than the Broadway audience,” she gushed on Twitter.
“#InTheHeights was alive as it’s ever been last night at George Washington HS and gratitude is the name of my day,” Hudes added.
The Mary Poppins Returns star followed in the footsteps of Sigourney Weaver, who surprised New Jersey’s North Bergen High School in April after they staged an ambitious high school production of her iconic horror movie, Alien.
In the Heights is set for release in June next year (20), and stars Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Melissa Barrera, and Leslie Grace.
Based on the Broadway musical, the film takes place over the course of three days and follows the lives of the local immigrant residents living in Washington Heights in New York City’s Upper Manhattan.
