Actress Lola Kirke has blasted Taylor Swift for not using her voice to challenge President Donald Trump’s politics.
The Mozart in the Jungle actress and celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Gabrielle Union, Amy Schumer, Amy Poehler, John Legend, and Kerry Washington, have been vocal in their support for causes such as Planned Parenthood and the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline, and the actress told Vogue.com that well-known celebrities have a duty to use their voices to speak up for causes that need the attention.
“For me, it’s really important to elevate voices and causes that don’t get as much attention with whatever attention I get,” Lola, the sister of Girls star Jemima Kirke, told Vogue.com as she promoted new movie Gemini at South by Southwest (SXSW) festival.
“I totally understand why some people won’t do that. I definitely think that there are certain celebrities who really could offer more help to grassroots movements with their power – and don’t.”
The 26-year-old then singled out the Blank Space singer, who has almost 99 million followers on Instagram, as someone who she feels could do more and compared her silence to voting for Trump.
“Like Taylor f**king Swift, who may as well have voted for Trump, as far as I’m concerned, by not doing anything,” she blasted.
Taylor remained largely silent over her political affiliation during the election, popping up only to tweet a picture of herself going to vote. She also tweeted a message of support for those who attended the Women’s March in January (17).
Lola, who was born in London, added she does not want to contribute to the “smokescreen” that encourages people to think that issues concerning reproductive rights, the environment and human rights don’t exist.
“You can imbue everything you’re doing with meaning. I believe that life is meaningful and I believe there are things that are important that are not getting the attention that they deserve,” she said.
