Lorde Sends Fans on Birthday Treasure Hunt

Lorde sent fans in her native New Zealand on a birthday treasure hunt to find concert tickets.

The Green Light singer, real name Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, turned 21 on Tuesday (07Nov17) and celebrated the occasion by playing a gig in Dunedin, her homeland’s fifth largest city.

Ahead of the gig the star posted a picture of a history book on Twitter which she captioned, “DUNEDIN: left a little package in the city library behind this book. see you tonight.”

An eagle-eyed fan with the Twitter handle @EmJUson spotted her message and tipped off his friends, who made their way to the library and found concert tickets and a T-shirt with a design hand drawn by Lorde herself.

As he was in the Philippines, the user was unable to attend the gig himself, but wrote that his pals would send him the shirt.

In a message to Lorde, he wrote, “I SENT THE TIP TO MY FRIENDS AND THEY GOT IT! THEYRE GONNA SEND ME THE SHIRT ALL THE WAY HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES I LOVE YOU OMG (oh my God) (sic).”

The concert, at Dunedin Town Hall, began with fans singing happy birthday to the star, before she embarked on a 90-minute set.

Lorde made her return to music earlier this year with her long awaited comeback album Melodrama – the follow-up to her smash hit 2013 debut Pure Heroine.

Fans grew frustrated over the delay in releasing new material, but the singer’s return was a triumphant one as Melodrama topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart upon its release in June.

The New Zealand leg of her world tour continues in Christchurch on Wednesday.
