Lowe gathered with New York firefighters after bin Laden’s death

The actor admits he was in disbelief after U.S. President Barack Obama announced the al-Qaeda mastermind had been killed in a CIA mission in Pakistan.

Now he hopes bin Laden’s death will bring closure for those who lost loved ones in the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America.

He tells Access Hollywood, “People just spontaneously gathered when they heard the news that we had killed Osama bin Laden. And to be there and share that with New Yorkers, was an amazing, amazing moment…

“At first, I didn’t believe it. I thought, ‘Nine years, why today? What happened?’ And now, I’m just really proud of those guys that went in there and did that, with the bravery that they showed. And I’m happy for the President. I’m happy for the families that can really hopefully begin to move on.”

The event was particularly resonant for Lowe, who was flying on 31 August, 2001 on a flight which turned out to be a test-run for the terrorists.

He adds, “I flew with the 9/11 hijackers, I was on a dry run (on) the one that went into the Pentagon, and I knew the crew.”
