Luke Bryan has defended his fellow American Idol judge Katy Perry after she was criticized for pressuring a young virgin to kiss her on the talent show.
Katy sparked controversy when she locked lips with wannabe Benjamin Glaze during his audition after the bashful 20-year-old confessed he’d never kissed a girl.
The drama blew up when the audition aired on TV earlier this month (Mar18) and the aspiring singer told The New York Times his kiss with Katy was “a tad bit uncomfortable”, adding, “I wanted to save it for my first relationship. I wanted it to be special.”
But Bryan insists the drama was blown out of proportion.
“It’s unfortunate that stuff like that turns into a story that big,” the country singer tells The Morning Show. “I watched an actual interview where Ben, the kid that was involved, said that he was cool with everything.
“I gotta back Katy on that. She’s in there working hard and making fun TV… We are going to get it right sometimes and get it wrong sometimes. We’re in there critiquing people. I may say something one day that everybody’s not going to like. That’s just what you signed up for. At the end of the day, me and (fellow judge) Lionel (Richie) and Katy and (host) Ryan (Seacrest), our hearts are in the right place.”
Since the kiss drama blew up, Glaze has taken to social media to clarify his comments.
“I do not think I was sexually harassed by Katy Perry and I am thankful for the judges comments and critiques (sic),” he wrote on Instagram. “I was uncomfortable in a sense of how I have never been kissed before and was not expecting it.”
