Lupita Nyong’o needed acupuncture and massage therapy after 12 Years A Slave

Actress Lupita Nyong’o underwent acupuncture and massage therapy after completing work on 12 Years A Slave to help her recover emotionally from the harrowing drama. The star portrays a slave named Patsey, who is physically abused and repeatedly raped in the film, and she admits the brutal role was tough to let go after the movie finished.
Speaking on U.S. breakfast show Live! with Kelly and Michael, she explains, “I did a lot of self care… because 12 Years A Slave was an emotionally taxing thing to go through…
“Just going there to that emotional place was hard so it was really important for me to remind myself that I was not Patsey after all.”
Nyong’o’s dedication to her performance has already paid off – she has already landed a nomination for her supporting role for the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards, while she just lost out on the Breakthrough Actor prize at the Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York on Monday (02Dec13) to Fruitvale Station’s Michael B. Jordan.
