Mae Young dies at 90

Veteran wrestler Mae Young has died at the age of 90. The ring queen passed away in Columbia, South Carolina on Tuesday (14Jan14), days after editors at a South Carolina newspaper issued a retraction after publishing a premature report suggesting she had died last week (ends10Jan14).
She was hospitalised last month (Dec13), but no official cause of death has been given.
Young launched her wrestling career in the 1930s and continued to fight with opponents until 2010.
In 2008, she was inducted into the sport’s WWE Hall of Fame.
She was the only U.S. wrestler ever to compete in nine separate decades.
WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon tells WWE.com, “There will never be another Mae Young. Her longevity in sports entertainment may never be matched, and I will forever be grateful for all of her contributions to the industry. On behalf of WWE, I extend our sincerest condolences to her family and friends.”
Paying tribute to Young on Twitter.com, wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson adds, “She’s a wrestling pioneer. I truly had deep affection & respect for ‘Aunty Mae’ Young. RIP. IMissUMae (sic).”
