Man arrested over alleged threats against George W. Bush

Authorities in New York have arrested a man over allegations he threatened to kill former U.S. President George W. Bush. Benjamin Smith, 44, was taken into custody on Friday (31Jan14) after U.S. Secret Service agents allegedly found him sitting in his car in Manhattan with a loaded rifle, two boxes of ammunition, a machete and a container of gasoline.
According to a complaint filed at U.S. District Court in Manhattan the same day as his arrest, authorities had been alerted to Smith by his mother, who had found a note threatening the former American leader at the home she shared with her son. She also reported that a rifle was missing from the property.
In court documents, it is claimed Smith threatened to “kill, kidnap and inflict bodily harm” on Bush, as well as declaring his love for Barbara, one of the former president’s twin daughters.
A spokesperson for Bush states the ex-politician, who left office in 2009 and now lives in Texas, was not aware of Smith or any alleged threats.
