Marvel Taps ‘Community’ Creator Dan Harmon for ‘Doctor Strange’ Reshoots

Marvel Studios has recruited Dan Harmon to add some last minute scenes to new film Doctor Strange.

The creator of the TV sitcom Community has been tapped to work on new pages of the script “for additional photography” being undertaken on the superhero flick, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular astrophysicist-turned-hero, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Principal photography on the film wrapped in New York in April (16).

Harmon, 43, has written for the big screen before – he did uncredited work on 2008’s Kung Fu Panda and has a credit on 2006’s Monster House, but this will be his first foray into writing for superheroes.

The move to bring on Harmon, a self-proclaimed geek and science fiction fan, suggests that Marvel wants to include some of the absurdist comedic touch that the writer is best known for.

Last month (Jul16), Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson confirmed that, as has become routine with Marvel movies, there would be additional photography on the project. The moviemaker described the new material as being “bits and pieces” to clarify logic in some scenes.

“I don’t think there are any wholesale reshot scenes,” he said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “It’s mostly little shots within scenes to clarify points. There were some points that the audiences found overstated, and we trimmed those back in editorial, and there were some points of explanation that were not clear enough, so we’re adding a bit of clarity to those.”

Derrickson co-wrote the Doctor Strange script, working with Jon Spaihts and C. Robert Cargill.

Doctor Strange, which also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams, is due to hit theatres in the U.K. on 28 October (16) and a week later in the U.S., on 4 November (16).
