Mary Poppins author wasn’t happy with Disney’s movie casting

The veteran played Cockney chimney sweep Bert opposite Julie Andrews in the 1964 film adaptation of P.L. Travers’ book, and he admits the author was far from impressed with the casting.

Speaking about upcoming movie Saving Mr. Banks, which chronicles Walt Disney’s battle to persuade Travers to let him adapt her book for the big screen, Van Dyke tells TMZ.com, “The movie is mostly about the 20 years it took Walt Disney to sell her (Travers) on the movie. She didn’t want to do it… She just hated the idea…

“(And) she hated Julie and she hated me. She didn’t like either one of us.”
