Matt Smith proposes Vanessa Hudgens play Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

Matt Smith would like to see Vanessa Hudgens play Meghan, Duchess Of Sussex on The Crown.

The actor portrayed Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip on the first and second seasons of the historical drama about the British royal family, with the third season – featuring an entirely new cast – due to be released in 2019.

Emmy nominee Matt was asked about The Crown during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Wednesday night (15Aug18), where Vanessa was also a guest, and he pointed out that the 29-year-old would be perfect to play former Suits actress Meghan, who married Prince Harry in May, in a future instalment of the hit programme.

“Maybe you could play Meghan Markle?” he suggested, to which the actress replied: “Dreams are coming true. I was thinking (I could play) a foreign princess but I’ll take that.”

Spring Breakers star Vanessa went on to share that she had actually been watching The Crown in order to work on a posh accent for a potential role in a period piece.

During the interview, Matt also spoke about the third series of The Crown, where The Queen will be played by Olivia Colman, replacing Claire Foy, while Outlander’s Tobias Menzies will take over as Philip.

The 35-year-old explained he actually already knew Tobias because they were both cast in a U.K. tour of play The History Boys and added that he had given him a couple of pieces of advice about his new role.

“I said a few things. I told him a good book to read called The Young Prince… I just said, ‘God make sure they pay you enough and make sure it’s even,'” he smiled, referring to the backlash over producers’ confirmation in March that Claire was paid less than Matt during the first two series of the show.
