Matt Smith: ‘Selena Gomez should play Meghan Markle’

The Crown’s Matt Smith is keen to see singer Selena Gomez portray Meghan Markle in a TV drama about her romance with fiance Prince Harry.

The former Doctor Who star and Claire Foy are currently playing Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II on hit Netflix royal drama The Crown, and during a recent interview they were asked who they would like to see play actress Markle if her courtship with Harry is ever covered on a future series.

“Who’s the singer who goes out with Justin Bieber? Selena Gomez,” Matt said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live on Thursday (07Dec17).

“You love Selena Gomez,” Foy added before Smith stated, “She’s playing Meghan Markle!”
Foy did not agree with Smith, but she insisted she was thrilled about the engagement news.

“We love it that they’re getting married, it’s amazing,” she said. “She’s (Markle) an actress, so that’s great.”

“Well she’s not anymore, her life is over,” Smith jokingly added.

Matt recently confessed he felt sorry for Meghan, stating, “It’s such a transition in her life, and it’s such a huge thing to take on. Life as she knows it is gone. But hey… she’s marrying the Prince of Britain – how exciting for her.”

Markle starred on the show Suits for seven seasons, but following her engagement announcement, she retired from acting to focus on a public life as a member of the British royal family.

“I don’t see it as giving anything up, I just see it as a change,” she said in an interview with Sky News after the engagement was announced last month (Nov17). “It’s a new chapter, right? And also, keep in mind, I’ve been working on (Suits) for seven years. We were very, very fortunate to have that sort of longevity on a series… I’ve ticked this box, and I feel very proud of the work I’ve done there, and now it’s time to work with (Harry) as a team.”
