Michael Caine voted for Britain to leave the European Union (EU) because he’d rather “be a poor master than a rich servant.”

In June (16), the British government held a referendum calling for the public to vote on whether Britain should remain a member of the EU or leave, and 51.9 per cent of voters were in favor of leave, sending shockwaves around the country and causing Prime Minister David Cameron to resign.

Michael Caine has now admitted he voted leave and explained his reasons during an interview with Sky News.

“I think it will be alright,” the 84-year-old said. “I voted for Brexit… what it is with me, I’d rather be a poor master than a rich servant. It wasn’t about the racism, immigrants or anything, it was about freedom.”

The acting veteran, who was promoting his new film Going In Style, added that he was confident it will work out “alright” in the end.

“Politics is always chaotic,” he explained. “In politics you’re always going into areas you’ve never been before, so you’re going to get lost and then you’re going to find your way, and then it’ll be alright.”

Following Cameron’s departure, Theresa May was made Britain’s Prime Minister. She officially began the withdrawal process in March (17) and Britain’s exit from the EU should be complete by April 2019.
