Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard bring Macbeth back to the big screen

Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard are to revive William Shakespeare’s Macbeth for a new film adaptation. The Prometheus star will play the Scottish king in a new imagining of the tragedy, while French actress Cotillard will appear as Lady Macbeth after reportedly seeing off competition from fellow Oscar winner Natalie Portman to win the part.
Snowtown moviemaker Justin Kurzel will direct the film, which is due to start filming in the U.K. in January (14), according to Deadline.com.
The casting news comes shortly after it was revealed Sir Kenneth Branagh will be staging the play in New York next summer (13), after previously appearing in the production in Manchester, England this year (13) opposite Alex Kingston.
James McAvoy also recently played the title role in a London stage production, and Macbeth has previously been adapted for the screen by both Orson Welles and Roman Polanski.
