Mikey Way: ‘My Chemical Romance split was like a family death’

Former My Chemical Romance bassist Mikey Way has compared the band’s 2013 break-up to the death of a family member, insisting it took him a while to get over the split. A year after the rockers announced they were parting ways, frontman Gerard Way’s bandmate brother reveals time has been a great healer and it’s only now that he’s been able to appreciate just how successful the Welcome to the Black Parade hitmakers had been.
He tells Kerrang magazine, “I was going through it. It (the band’s split) was sad, like the passing of a family member. But over time I got great joy and pleasure from reflecting.
“I was able to truly put on some songs and be like, ‘Wow, we really did something. We cracked the heavens.’ With MCR, we were so busy. I was never able to stop and smell the roses, or evaluate myself completely. That’s what the past year was all about. I was able to dig deep inside myself and become the man I always wanted to be.”
Way has since started a new group, called Electric Century.
