Miley Cyrus wants Black Mirror to show dark side of pop stardom

Miley Cyrus’ hopes her Black Mirror episode will help explain the dark side of pop stardom to her fans.

Miley, who previously starred as fictional pop star Hannah Montana before embarking on her own music career, plays purple-haired music idol Ashley O in the upcoming fifth series of creator Charlie Brooker’s dystopian dramas.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1 at their Big Weekend event in Middlesbrough, England, where she performed on Saturday (May 25, 2019), Miley said the episode would be “outrageously out there and dark” and show the problems facing women in music.

“This is the story of females in the music industry,” she told BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat. “I understand everyone’s gone through this but I do think for females in the industry… it’s hard to be taken seriously. People assume that if you’re not wearing a body suit and singing pop music, why would anyone want to see you.”

The episode, which is called Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too and will debut on Netflix next month, also features a robot doll of Ashley O, which shares her personality and makes friends with fans.

The 26-year-old admitted that the plot had some similarities to her own life but is not “her story”. She also confessed to being a huge fan of Black Mirror’s ability to address the negative side of technological progress, adding: “We love anything about the darkness of technology. I love that.”

Its creator Charlie previously revealed the star had a big input into the episode’s script, telling SFX magazine: “She had all sorts of insights and opinions on the script. We had a Skype call with her. She really related to the character and had some useful observations – and very quickly she was on board. I think people will be surprised by what she gets up to in the episode, and by her performance.”

During her Radio 1 gig, Miley performed new tracks, reportedly titled Cattitude, Dream, and Mother’s Daughter. She has informed fans that her latest music project, She is Coming will arrive on Thursday.
