Molly Shannon: ‘I had no idea my dad was gay’

Actress and comedienne Molly Shannon is glad her father had the courage to ‘come out’ as a gay man before he died after hiding his sexuality for over 50 years.
The Hotel Transylvania star spent most of her upbringing oblivious to the fact her dad was a closeted gay man.
“He was raised Roman Catholic, born in 1926, when it wasn’t really an option and it was a different time,” Molly tells Access Hollywood Live.
“When I got my first coloured headshots he sprinkled gold stars all over them… but I didn’t necessarily put it together.”
“I felt so lucky because before he died we were able to talk about all of that. He came out at 72. We were very close and he was just wonderful, a very open person.”
Shannon was able to channel her own experiences with a closeted relative for her new movie role as the mother of a gay child in Miles.
