Movie reviews: “From Hell”

Jack the Ripper is back on the screen again — and the jury is deadlocked
over his exploits.

Lou Lumenick in the New York Post calls From Hell, starring Johnny Depp, “an instant classic … a gripping and
stylish thriller. … the classiest and best-acted slasher movie of all
time.”

Not quite so enthusiastic is Chris Vognar, who writes in the
Dallas Morning News: “An occasionally awkward mix of art film and
slasher flick, From Hell manages to make its luridness intelligent
enough — and its intelligence lurid enough — to send you home satisfied.”

On the other hand, Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer writes
that the movie “is about as convincing as a visit to a theme-park haunted
house.”
