Nadezhda Tolokonnikova freed

Jailed Pussy Riot star Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has been released from prison in Russia. The punk activist, serving two years for hooliganism over a protest against the country’s President Vladimir Putin, was freed on Monday (23Dec13) under a government amnesty just hours after her bandmate Maria Alekhina was also released.
The pair was caged along with a third Pussy Riot member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, last year (12) but the jail sentences sparked an international human rights outcry, with stars including Madonna and Sir Paul McCartney calling for the women’s release.
Samutsevich was freed in October last year (12) when her sentence was commuted.
Tolokonnikova and Alekhina, who are both mothers to young children, were not due for release until March (14) but were freed on Monday under a presidential amnesty.
