Naomi Campbell calls on young people to tackle diversity issues

Veteran supermodel Naomi Campbell has urged the younger generation to tackle humanitarian issues.

The Brit was among the key speakers at the One Young World summit, which took place in The Hague, Netherlands, over the weekend (19-21Oct18).

She joined Terry Crews, Bob Geldof, Rosario Dawson, Akon, and Amber Heard at the event, and, during her empowering speech, Naomi encouraged young people to work together to bring about real change in the world.

“As you go out into the world, I challenge you to explore your passions through a humanitarian lens,” she implored. “You’ll find that you’ll begin to tackle large humanitarian issues, which will garner strength in numbers and input from many different voices and this is good.

“In my experience, the greatest impact and the best solutions come about when people from diverse backgrounds (are) bound together by a common goal. It is truly a beautiful experience to be a part of a meaningful change, and we are all part of this meaningful change by just being here tonight.”

Before her rousing speech, the 48-year-old spoke to The Press Association about the current state of diversity in the media, revealing she is far from impressed with what she sees in weekly celebrity and lifestyle publications, like Hello!

“I picked up a Hello! magazine today and if I was not from London I would think, ‘My God, London is completely whitewashed’. That’s what it sells you, it’s awful,” she vented. “London is one of the most diverse cities and cosmopolitan cities in the world and we have a huge diversity of people. I was shocked. I was just like, ‘Wow’.”

Proving how dedicated she is to the cause, Naomi recently met with British Prime Minister Theresa May to discuss the issue: “I was very impressed with the PM’s desire to both acknowledge and confront these shared interests of tackling race equality and mental health,” she told her Instagram followers. “I also pledged to support the PM on these issues.”
