Naya Rivera: ‘I’m more picky about work since becoming a mum’

Naya Rivera is prioritising her work commitments after becoming a mum.
The Glee star welcomed son Josey with husband Ryan Dorsey in December (15). Since his birth, Naya has appeared in an episode of American Dad! and is currently shooting the film Mad Families, which is due out on streaming service Crackle next year (17). The 29-year-old insists she loves to work, but she is being picky because of her 12 month old.
“There’s a lot in the air, but to be honest I’m taking some time to figure out exactly which project I really want to do next,” she tells VVV magazine. “Being a mom, which I love, certainly changes your priorities. As much as I love singing, dancing and acting I really want to find a new balance between my work and my family life. My son Josey is now my number one priority, which eliminates all those long location projects.”
Naya feels “elevated” by her new role as a mum to Josey and she has felt the direction of her life change following his arrival.
“I still feel like the same me but…now I have different priorities,” she says. “Having someone else to look out for other than myself is a really beautiful thing, it gives you a whole new dimension of joy, and elevates your life in so many ways.”
Naya recently opened up about many aspects of her personal life including her past abortion and working on Glee in her upcoming memoir, Sorry Not Sorry, and the actress explains she was inspired to pen the book because of her passion for writing.
“I’d probably be a writer in some form (if I wasn’t an actress), either songwriting or screenplays,” she continues. “I really love writing and… that’s one of the reasons I really wanted to write my book.”
