Former South African President and humanitarian icon Nelson Mandela is fighting for life in a Pretoria hospital after his condition became critical over the weekend (22-23Jun13). Mandela, 94, was hospitalised on 8 June (13) for a recurring lung infection. Prior to the weekend, his condition had been described as serious but stable.
In a statement released on Sunday (23Jun13), the country’s current leader Jacob Zuma insists doctors are doing “everything possible” to keep Mandela alive, adding, “He is in good hands.”
