Top Story: Kevin Spacey Recants Wild Mugging Story

Kevin Spacey made, and then retracted, a complaint he made to London police over the weekend that he’d been mugged in a park–and he wants people to know he is sorry. The Daily Mirror newspaper reported that Spacey had been “brutally mugged” in a south London park at 4:30 a.m. Saturday while walking his dog. But he later told British Broadcasting Corp. radio that the truth was less dramatic. Spacey said a young man approached him near the Old Vic Theater–where he is the artistic director–with a sob story about needing to call his mother and asked to borrow his phone. But the man took the phone and ran off, with Spacey hot on his tail. According to The Associated Press, Spacey said he had reported the incident to police, but went back a few hours later to clarify his story. The 44-year-old actor said he “woke up after a couple of hours’ sleep and I thought, you know, there is a difference between assault and theft and it just wasn’t (right) for me to not come clean about my own level of embarrassment and being humble at the fact that I got taken by the oldest con going.”

Tabloid Claims Beckham Confessed Infidelities

The UK tabloid The News of the World reported Sunday that English soccer captain David Beckham has confessed to his pop star wife Victoria Beckham that he did have an affair. The paper also reports Victoria, who received a $1.8 million pink diamond ring from David for her 30th birthday Saturday, is now considering a trial separation, Reuters reports. Speculation about the Beckham marriage, which has received coverage rivaling the nation’s royal family, stared when David Beckham moved to Real Madrid from Manchester United last summer, while Victoria Beckham stayed in Britain with their two children. The allegations of David Beckham’s infidelity have dominated the front pages of Britain’s tabloid papers for two weeks now.

Tom Brokaw To Leave Post

After more than 20 years as a television news anchor for the NBC Nightly News, veteran newscaster Tom Brokaw announced he will leave the post Dec. 1. Brokaw, who has been anchoring the show since 1983, had already announced his intention to step down after the presidential elections in November, but the network confirmed the date last week during an affiliate meeting in New York, Variety reports. He will remain at the network news division but will focus mostly on specials. Brian Williams, who NBC hired from its financial news cabler CNBC nearly a decade ago to be prepped as evening news anchor, will fill Brokaw‘s shoes.

Hooker Sues Motley Crue’s Vince Neil

A former Moonlite BunnyRanch prostitute filed is suing former Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil for at least $20,000 in lost wages and other costs stemming from the July 10, 2003 incident, the AP reports. Andrea “TrixXxie Blue” Terry claims Neil grabbed her by the neck, pushed her against a window and pulled her to the floor after she and another prostitute refused to have sex with him until he paid $4,000 for each woman. The lawsuit also claims brothel owner Dennis Hof was negligent because he failed to call police. Hof, however, told the Las Vegas Sun he believes Terry made up the story against Neil, who was at the brothel at Hof’s request. Hof said Terry should have known Neil would not have to pay for her services because they don’t charge celebs; they pay for the services themselves. Neil, who has a home in Las Vegas, pleaded no contest earlier this month to misdemeanor battery in the incident. He was fined $1,000 and ordered to complete anger management classes.

HIV Scare Doesn’t Stop Porn Actors

Despite the HIV scare that lead to a voluntary moratorium on many porn sets last week, many adult movie actors said they would keep working. About a dozen porn production companies froze production after two performers tested positive for the virus that causes AIDS. Sharon Mitchell, the executive director of the nonprofit Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation, told The Associated Press the names of about 65 performers who had sex with the two HIV-infected actors or slept with their movie sex partners were posted on industry quarantine sites that prevent them from working for two months until their next HIV tests are completed. The last industry HIV scare was in 1999, when a male actor tested positive for the disease. No other actors have been found to be infected as yet.

Judge Annuls James Brown’s Wife’s Marriage

A Charleston, S.C., family court judge signed an order Thursday dissolving the first marriage of the wife of singer James Brown the grounds that it was never consummated, clearing the way for an annulment between her and the Godfather of Soul, clearing the way for their remarriage. AP reports Tomi Rae Brown, 33, married James Brown three years ago while still legally married to Javed Ahmed of Pakistan. When Brown, 70, filed for an annulment of his marriage to Tomi Rae after he was charged with criminal domestic violence in January following a fight at their home, her 1997 marriage to Ahmed had to be annulled before the Brown annulment could proceed. James Brown is expected to appear in magistrate’s court in June for a jury trial on the domestic violence charge and his lawyer said he plans to remarry Tomi Rae after the annulment is granted.

Chappelle Ups Ante with Comedy Central

Comedian Dave Chappelle, whose sketch comedy series Chappelle’s Show is Comedy Central’s highest-rated program in the Wednesday 10:30 p.m. slot on any network among men 18-34–the most difficult demographic for any network to reach–wants more money. Chappelle‘s representatives are set to begin preliminary talks with the network to bring him back for a third season and sources told Reuters he looking to bump his current $90,000 per episode paycheck. Although it’s a meaty sum by basic-cable standards, Chappelle isn’t just the star–he also writes and executive produces the series with partner Neal Brennan. Reuters also reports the comedian is unhappy with his cut of DVD sales for the first-season package of Chappelle’s Show, which has sold 800,000 units since its Feb. 24 release.
