Nikki Sixx celebrates nine years sober

Rocker Nikki Sixx is celebrating a sobriety milestone after marking nine years clean of drink and drugs. The Motley Crue star struggled with substance abuse for years and was even declared clinically dead in 1987 when his heart stopped for two minutes after a heroin overdose, but he decided to clean up his act in 2004 and has managed to stay away from the temptations of being in a rock band.
He reached his nine year anniversary on Tuesday (02Jul13) with the help of a support programme, and he has taken to his Facebook.com page to share the lessons learned through his sobriety with fans.
In a detailed post online, he writes, “Today is my sobriety birthday. By letting go of self and ego, working a program that connects you to a higher power and giving back to those still struggling are just some of the important things you learn through sobriety. You get to repair the damage done from drink, drugs and horrific behavior’s (sic) that broke peoples (sic) hearts who loved you.
“For me taking away the substance just gave (me) a (sic) honest view of who I had become and then the healing started. I do believe without any program to help many are just dry drunks and there is always a danger of them going out again. Ive (sic) been there. It’s not pretty. This is no joking matter to me so I take it seriously.
“Today I get to be a better father, friend, artists (sic) & future husband ( the list goes on too )”.
Sixx signs off the note by encouraging others battling similar problems to put in the effort needed to regain control of their lives – and invites others to toast his achievement with a little tipple on his behalf.
He adds, “You get out of this what you put into it…Its (sic) not easy but it is the greatest gift you will ever receive IF your (sic) an addict…. Thanks for letting me share…. If your (sic) not an addict, have a drink on me today…..”
