Oprah Winfrey missed a chance to become a sports team owner when she lost out in a bidding war for the Los Angeles Clippers. The TV titan teamed up with music mogul David Geffen to form a consortium offering a reported $1.6 billion bid for the National Basketball Association (NBA) team, which was put up for sale after owner Donald Sterling became engulfed in a race row.
Winfrey’s group lost out to former Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer, who won the franchise with a bid of $2 billion. The sale has yet to be finalised.
Sterling hit headlines in April (14) over incendiary remarks he made in a leaked tape conversation, which prompted comedian Arsenio Hall to launch a crowd-sourcing campaign in a bid to buy the team himself. He promised to donate the money raised to charity if he failed to earn the billions of dollars needed to buy the Clippers.
