Paddington 2 sets new review record on Rotten Tomatoes movie website

Paddington 2 has been given a huge critical thumbs up after toppling Lady Bird as movie site Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed film ever.
The sequel to the hugely successful 2014 film about late author Michael Bond’s beloved bear has scored a perfect 100 per cent score with 167 positive reviews and not a single negative one.
Lady Bird is now the site’s second-best-reviewed film with a score of 99 per cent and only one negative review.
As of Thursday (18Jan18), Paddington 2, which was released in Europe before Christmas, has taken $163 million (GBP117 million) at the worldwide box office with at least five major markets yet to release the film.
Director Paul King, who also directed the first film, shared his delight with Deadline editors, stating, “It’s incredibly gratifying. It’s such a strange process making these films, which are preposterously labour-intensive. Normally you feel a film is coming into shape fairly quickly, but when it’s semi-animated, so much of it evolves over the following year and you spend so many dozens of hours in darkened rooms looking at incredibly small details.
“You get incredibly meticulous and control-y over every last frame. But there’s a danger you entirely lose your mind – and there’s an extraordinary moment when your head comes above water and the first response is from critics.”
He added that the film was finished “on a Wednesday at 11(am)” and first screened for critics three hours later.
“It’s a strange experience and you can’t help but hope for the best for this little character and the film you’ve created,” King adds. “It’s very lovely they (critics) were warm and enthusiastic.”
