Penelope Cruz finds the idea of working with her husband Javier Bardem every year “kind of scary”.
The Spanish stars first appeared together in comedy-drama Jamon, Jamon in 1992, but didn’t begin dating until they co-starred in 2008’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and later married in 2010.
Since then, the couple has appeared in 2013’s The Counselor, 2017’s Loving Pablo, and most recently in 2018’s Everybody Knows – though Penelope is adamant that they don’t have some sort of rule about the projects they select.
“Obviously we can’t choose parts just for logistical reasons, like, ‘Oh, let’s work together more often because it’s easier.’ No. In fact, it’s not something we want to do that often. Partly out of a desire to protect what we have. On the one hand, it’s easier because you know that person, he knows you, and the way you work is very similar,” she said in an interview for the February issue of U.S. Marie Claire magazine. “On the other hand, the idea of it happening every year is kind of scary. You never know if that might mix things up too much. My instinct is that it would. I think it’s better for it to just be once in a while, even though they’ve been very good experiences.”
Penelope went on to explain that if she does decide to star alongside Javier, 49, again, she would be tempted to take on a film in which they aren’t a couple.
Elsewhere in the chat, the brunette beauty also touched on her personal life and two children; son Leo, seven, and five-year-old daughter Luna.
And while she commented that motherhood is what has made her the “happiest”, she still struggles with some of the pressures placed on women.
“There are so many taboos related to women… This image society gives you – that you have to be a super-woman, that you need to be out of hospital in 24 hours, wearing high heels. No, you already are a superwoman! We’re all superwomen – those of us who have children and those of us who don’t,” the 44-year-old added.
