PJ Harvey’s Kosovo notebooks to become radio drama

Singer Pj Harvey’s notebooks from a trip to Kosovo are to be used as the basis for a BBC radio drama.
The 47-year-old British musician made the notes as part of several journeys she made to places affected by war while working on ideas for her album The Hope Six Demolition Project between 2011 and 2014.
The notes made on her visit to Kosovo, which in 1998 was torn apart by a conflict between forces from the Republic of Yugoslavia and Kosovan rebels.
Written by playwright and author Fin Kennedy, the five-part drama will star British actors Michelle Keegan and Nico Mirallegro as two Kosovan refugees returning to their birthplace after growing up in Manchester, England. The drama, called On Kosovo Field, will air over a week in January next year (16).
In a statement posted on Harvey’s website, Kennedy said, “The siblings are a metaphor for Kosovo itself, the newest country in Europe, poignantly searching for an identity after centuries of conflict.”
The Kosovan war came to an end in 1999 when Yugoslav government troops withdrew from the region after NATO airstrikes against the country.
Kosovo is now a partially recognised nation, with 110 of the United Nations’ 193 member states acknowledging it as an independent country.
