Director Mike Mills thought it would be a good bonding experience to send the two Brits to Barneys department store in Los Angeles before filming began.
The moviemaker gave McGregor $200 (£125) and told him to buy the Sound of Music star a scarf.
The Trainspotting star recalls, “Christopher was obsessed with getting a pair of black skinny jeans, which I had to pay for since he had no money on him, and one scarf, because that’s what I’d been told to get.”
