President Obama congratulates Michael Sam for making football history

U.S. President Barack Obama has reached out to sports star Michael Sam after he became the first openly gay football player to be drafted into the National Football League (NFL). In February (14), Sam took the brave step to ‘come out’ as a gay man while he was a defensive lineman for the University of Missouri.
Sports fans were unsure if the announcement would affect his chances of being drafted into the professional football league, but on Saturday (10May14), Sam was told that he would be playing for the St. Louis Rams.
The emotional moment was caught on camera, with the 24 year old breaking down in tears when he was told the news, and now President Obama has spoken out to congratulate the athlete.
A statement from the White House reads, “From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are.”
Sam took to Twitter.com after receiving the news and wrote, “Thank you to the St. Louis Rams and the whole city of St. Louis. I’m using every (ounce) of this to achieve greatness!!”
