Rami Malek has denied he had any awareness of the allegations of sexual misconduct linked to Bohemian Rhapsody director Bryan Singer.

The Mr. Robot star, who portrayed Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the biopic, earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for the role on Tuesday (22Jan19), with the film landing a further four nominations including Best Picture.

And in an interview with the Los Angeles Times celebrating his “euphoric” nomination, the 37-year-old insisted he wasn’t aware of the allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding the film director.

“I didn’t know much about Bryan. I think that the allegations and things were, believe it or not, honestly something I was not aware of, and that is what it is,” Malek said. “Who knows what happens with that… but I think somehow we found a way to persevere through everything that was thrown our way.”

Singer hit headlines in 2017 when it emerged that a Washington man had filed a lawsuit against him, alleging the star sexually assaulted him in 2003 – when he was 17 years old. Singer denied the allegations. He was previously accused of sexual assault in 2014 but that case was later dropped.

Singer was fired from Bohemian Rhapsody in December 2017 after unexpectedly missing several days on set, and was replaced by British director Dexter Fletcher.

When asked about fans’ confusion over how to react to Singer’s involvement in the film amid the allegations, Rami answered: “I think they can understand that Bryan Singer was fired from the film. And that can be something that they can look at from a perspective of understanding why they can appreciate the film.

“And as far as I’m concerned, I never want to take away from Freddie’s story. I think that puts a button on it in a number of ways.”

On Wednesday, four men accused the director of sexual misconduct in an expose published by The Atlantic magazine. Singer’s lawyer Andrew B. Brettler denied the allegations, and said that Singer has never been arrested for or charged with any crime and the director categorically denies ever having sex with, or a preference for, underage men.
