Rare Monroe photos and pivotal career letter to be auctioned

The model shots, taken by Joseph Jasgur, are among the items that will be going under the hammer at the Julien’s Auctions event, which runs from 1 to 4 December (11).

The lots also include a letter the aspiring star wrote to her foster mother, Grace Goddard, to describe her first meeting with U.S. Army photographer David Conover, who helped launch the 19-year-old icon-to-be’s modeling career. The eight-page letter gives insight on Norma Jeane’s marriage to Jimmie Dougherty and her hopes of a better career.

The letter is expected to fetch up to $50,000 (£31,250).

A spokesman for Julien’s tells WENN, “With encouragement from Conover, Monroe took steps to join the Blue Book Modeling Agency where she met photographer Joseph Jasgur who took numerous photographs of the 19-year-old. These photographs and copyrights become available for the very first time and the complete archive and early image copyrights will be sold exclusively at this auction event. The settings for the photographs range from high atop buildings in Los Angeles to Zuma Beach.”

Other highlights at the auction include the Nolan Miller signature black and red gown worn by Elizabeth Taylor in Poker Alice, a collection of costumes and props from the 2000 blockbuster film The Grinch, Sean Connery’s 007 Walther-PPK .38 calibre pistol from Never Say Never Again and costumes from the cult film The Big Lebowski.
