Rebel Wilson Tearfully Recounts Defamation Lawsuit

Actress Rebel Wilson has tearfully revisited her defamation case against bosses at a magazine publishing company in September (17).

The Pitch Perfect star sat down for an interview with the Australian news show Sunday Night this weekend (ends26Nov17) to relive the details of the suit, in which she was awarded $3.7 million in damages from Bauer Media.

Wilson claimed articles published in tabloids owned by the company like Woman’s Day and Australian Women’s Weekly damaged her career, by alleging she lied about her age, her family background and her name.

According to the 37-year-old, the stories, which she maintains are inaccurate, caused her to lose out on film roles.

“Yes, I’m an actress and I’m in the public eye,” she said through tears during the sit down. “But I’m a human being, who worked really, really hard to get to that point. And then to have it all taken away was just, it was just malicious, and it was ugly.”

Wilson also noted the tabloid headlines ruined her reputation and cast her as dishonest.

“People were calling me a liar and a fake and for someone like me (who) prides herself on being very candid and authentic, it was just probably the most devastating thing they could have said to me,” she said.

At the time the pieces were published in 2015, Wilson’s status as an in-demand talent was put in jeopardy.

“I went from this girl who has just worked her absolute arse off to get where she was to just being torn down in a second, in a 24-hour period,” she shared.

“It’s very, very stressful when you become in the centre of a scandal,” she revealed. “And it was so salacious.”

The Australian native plans to donate her entire payout to charity.
