Residente leads nominations for Latin Grammy Awards with nine

Rapper Residente looks set for a big night at the 2017 Latin Grammy Awards after landing nine nominations.

The Calle 13 star’s self-titled debut solo album will compete for Album of the Year, while his track Guerra is up for both Song and Record of the Year.

He has also been shortlisted for Best Urban Song (Somos anormale), Best Tropical Song (Hijos del canaveral), and Best Short Form Music Video (Desencuentro), among others.

Colombian collaborators Maluma and Shakira have picked up seven and six nods, respectively.

Maluma has the rare honor of having the same three entries nominated for both Record and Song of the Year, the latter of which is awarded to the tune’s songwriters. He will be hoping to strike gold in both categories with either his single Felices los 4, his Shakira duet Chantaje, or his Ricky Martin collaboration Vente Pa’Ca.

Meanwhile, Shakira’s El Dorado will battle for Album of the Year, against Nicky Jam (Fenix), Juanes (Mis Planes Son Amarte), Danay Suarez (Palabras Manuales), and Vicente Garcia (A La Mar).

Other Record of the Year nominees include Ruben Blades’ La Flor De La Canela, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s smash hit Despacito, and Juanes, who is named twice for El Ratico featuring Kali Uchis, and his Mon Laferte track Amarrame.

Despacito also garners a nod for Song of the Year and Best Short Form Music Video, while the remix featuring Justin Bieber lands a nomination for Best Urban Fusion/Performance.

Officials at the Latin Recording Academy announced the 2017 nominees on Tuesday (26Sep17), a week later than planned, out of respect for those recovering from last week’s (ends22Sep17) devastating Mexico earthquake and those affected by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria.
