The Hairspray star found the 2001 atrocities tough to deal with, and after splitting from her ex-husband Rob Sussman – the father of her two sons – in the summer of 2003, she decided to make a fresh start and relocate to America’s West Coast.
She tells Scholastic Parent & Child magazine, “About eight years ago, I picked up my whole life and moved to Los Angeles. After living through September 11 in Manhattan and having two small children – my kids were six and two in 2004 – I really felt like I needed to change things up for my mental health. “It was scary to make these major life decisions that impacted my entire family, but ultimately I think they were for the best. I started focusing more on women’s advocacy projects.”
