Robert Downey, Jr. to be named Disney Legend

Robert Downey, Jr. is to be honored with a Disney Legend Award.

The actor will be recognized for his work playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, which fall under Disney’s banner, at the D23 Expo in August 2019.

Jon Favreau, the man who cast the actor in the role and directed and starred in the first two Iron Man films, will also be awarded the same accolade.

Robert played the billionaire playboy turned superhero for the final time in last month’s (April 2019) Avengers: Endgame, the 22nd installment in the franchise he initiated with his role in 2008’s Iron Man.

Darth Vader voice actor James Earl Jones, movie composer Hans Zimmer, Bette Midler, ABC News broadcaster Diane Sawyer, and Mulan actress Ming-Na Wen are also among those who will be honored at D23.

Praising the new Disney Legends, the company’s chairman Bob Iger, said: “The Disney Legends Award is the highest honor we can bestow; it’s a recognition of talent, a celebration of achievement, and an expression of profound gratitude to the remarkable men and women who have made an indelible mark on our company and our creative legacy.”

Bob will host the ceremony at the Anaheim Convention Center in California on August 23.
