Hollywood icon Robert Redford has heaped praise on Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling, insisting the film industry is in good hands as long as guys like that are making movies.

The 81-year-old directed Brad in 1992’s A River Runs Through It and then co-starred with him in 2001’s Spy Game, and he tells Esquire he thoroughly enjoyed working with the movie star.

Praising Pitt for his depth and magnetic screen presence, he admits he knew way back in the early 1990s that Brad was destined to become a big star.

“(This is) the character I would have played if I was younger – being seen as the golden boy but having a dark side,” he said of the character Pitt played in A River Runs Through It. “I felt we needed somebody who appeared to be a golden character and then we would find out that there was a flaw that would lead to his demise.”

He adds, “(Brad) had that. When he first came in, he had a look about him. I said, ‘Yeah, you’re looking at it. He’s going to succeed’.”

And Redford is also a big fan of Gosling, admitting he was left mesmerized after watching the 36-year-old’s performance in La La Land.

“He is so multi-talented,” he noted. “When I saw La La Land, I didn’t know he could play the piano. I knew he could do all these other things. He’s a terrific actor. I enjoy watching him. He’s really great.”
