Roland Emmerich offers to match donations to Human Rights Campaign

Independence Day director Roland Emmerich has offered to match up to $250,000 (£161,290) in donations made to America’s Human Rights Campaign (HRC) before Tuesday (02Jul13) at midnight. Officials at the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and overturned California’s Proposition 8 last week (26Jun13), forcing the government to provide equal benefits to same-sex couples across the nation and allow gay marriages to resume in the West Coast state.
Bosses behind the American advocacy group were a leading force behind the campaign, helping to raise money to fund the costly legal battle, and now Emmerich has thrown his support behind the organisation by agreeing to double any gift pledged to the HRC before the day’s end.
He tells The Hollywood Reporter, “HRC won’t stop until discrimination against LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Americans is eliminated. With last week’s Supreme Court rulings they proved it can be done, but we still have a long way to go in establishing equal rights for everyone. I support them every step of the way.”
