ROLE CALL: Downey Ditched

Has the Hollywood backlash begun for Robert Downey Jr?

The Hollywood Reporter says today that the recently busted actor is in the process of being replaced in the star-studded film “America’s Sweethearts.”

Currently, Hank Azaria is in talks to take over Downey‘s lot among a cast which includes Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta-Jones and John Cusack.

Downey joined the Revolution Studios project in October, but his recent drug arrest in Palm Springs, Calif., and impending Dec. 27 court date in Indio have rendered him unavailable, to say the least.

Shooting for the film will begin in January and is expected to end in mid-March. ‘POINT’ BLANK: Tom Cruise and George Clooney thought about doing it, but Richard Gere is actually going to do it.

No, we’re not talking about getting a hair transplant but rather the high-profile Warner Bros. film “Steinbeck’s Point of View.”

The movie, as Daily Variety tells us, is about a moribund man who’s in denial about his fate.

HEADING FOR ‘NAM: The obsession with history and war continues for Mel Gibson. Variety says that the “Braveheart” and “The Patriot” actor might reteam with screenwriter Randall Wallace (who wrote “Braveheart,” by the way) in the Vietnam war flick tentatively titled “Lost Patrol.”

It details the first major battle between U.S. and Viet Cong troops in Ia Drang Valley. ‘WORD’ TO THE WISE: “X-Men” co-star Famke Janssen will star as Michael Douglas‘ wife in the film “Don’t Say a Word,” the Reporter says.

Janssen portrayed Jean Grey in the summer blockbuster “X-Men,” and her other films include “House on Haunted Hill” and “Celebrity.”

Brittany Murphy (“Clueless“) has also signed on for the film about a New York shrink who must save his kidnapped daughter.

‘SUCKERS’ FOR LOVE: Actress Courtney Love, also known as the infrequent lead singer of Hole, will play Hollywood screen legend Texas Guinan in the film “Hello Suckers.”

According to Variety, the film depicts the life of the turn-of-the-century actress, who climbed her way to the top from showgirl to movie star.

Hmmm, sounds like Love would be perfect for the role.
