Romanian censors reverse ban on second Nymphomaniac film

Censors in Romania have reversed their decision to ban the second installment of Lars Von Trier’s controversial new movie Nymphomaniac amid a drama which has cost the president of the nation’s film rating commission his job. The unnamed executive lost his title after labelling the Danish filmmaker’s two-part project pornographic and agreeing that the movie was not fit for cinemagoers.
The film’s Romanian distributors at Independenta Film appealed the decision and learned that the movie is now back on the release schedule for 7 February (14) as planned, with an 18-plus rating.
Nymphomaniac Vol.1 was given the same rating upon its release in Romania earlier this month (Jan14).
Celebrating the news on Thursday (30Jan14), Independenta Film managing director Antoine Bagnaninchi told The Hollywood Reporter, “The ratings commission, under pressure (political, social and international), finally had to come back on its decision and has authorised the film. (It’s) great publicity for us and the film but very bad for the image of Romania outside (the country)!”
The two-part film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg as a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac telling her erotic life story to a celibate man. It also features Stellan Skarsgard, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Willem Dafoe and Uma Thurman.
